Off-Grid vs On-Grid Solar: Which System Fits Your Needs?
On-grid (grid-tied) systems are the simplest and cheapest per kW installed. They export surplus power to the grid and draw from it when your panels aren’t producing enough — but they shut down during a grid outage by design, for lineman safety, so they offer zero backup unless paired with a battery.
Off-grid systems are fully independent of the utility grid, sized to cover 100% of your load from panels and batteries alone. They’re the right call for remote sites with no grid connection, but for a grid-connected home they mean over-sizing your battery bank to survive worst-case cloudy stretches — a real cost.
Hybrid systems are the middle ground most homes actually want: grid-tied for day-to-day efficiency and net metering, with a battery bank that keeps critical loads running through an outage. The inverter automatically switches between grid, solar and battery power.
Our rule of thumb: choose on-grid if backup power isn’t a priority and you want the fastest payback; choose hybrid if outages are common in your area or you want future-proof backup; reserve pure off-grid for sites without practical grid access.
