
Lithium vs Lead-Acid Batteries: Which Is Right for You?
Lead-acid batteries win on upfront price and are still a sensible choice for occasional backup with light daily cycling. But the comparison changes quickly once you look past the sticker price.
Depth of discharge is the biggest factor. A lead-acid battery is typically rated for 50% usable depth of discharge to protect its lifespan, while a lithium (LiFePO4) battery comfortably handles 80-90%. That means a lithium battery rated at roughly half the capacity of a lead-acid bank can deliver the same usable backup.
Cycle life tells a similar story: lead-acid batteries are usually good for 300-500 cycles before capacity drops meaningfully, while quality lithium cells are rated for 2,000-6,000 cycles. Over a 10-year horizon, most homes replace their lead-acid bank two to three times, which closes — and often reverses — the initial price gap.
Lithium also needs no water top-ups, ventilates less hydrogen gas, and tolerates partial-state-of-charge operation far better, which matters if your system doesn’t always reach full charge in winter.
If your budget is tight today and you cycle the battery lightly, lead-acid remains a fair choice. If you run the system daily or want a 8-10+ year battery life, lithium is very likely the better total-cost decision.
